Organization’s Background

Bonocle’s journey began when its co-founder Abdelrazek Aly, suffered an accident that resulted in a broken hand. During his recovery, Aly joined a special needs center at his university where he and his friend, Ramy Abdulzaher, met a blind student for the first time. Witnessing the challenges faced by the blind community and learning that literacy among them stood at only 10% deeply impacted them. This experience inspired Aly and his team to challenge existing solutions and work toward ensuring that people with disabilities are fully included in society, with equal access to quality education and opportunities.

Since its inception, Bonocle has achieved significant milestones:

  • Global Reach: Bonocle is improving education for blind students in the United States, Canada, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates
  • Partnerships: Established collaborations with NGOs and major distributors
  • Recognition: Recipient of the K-Design Award and Gold IDA Design Award. Co-founders Aly and Ramy were featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 and Entrepreneur Magazine. Bonocle was also named Best Assistive Tech Startup in the MENA Region
  • Educational Impact: Advancing braille literacy through innovative educational tools
  • Inclusive Gaming: Organized the first inclusive gaming tournament during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM

These achievements reflect Bonocle’s ongoing commitment to making braille education accessible, engaging, and inclusive worldwide.

The MVP: Design & Impact

Bonocle combines a single-cell Braille hardware device with a comprehensive digital ecosystem designed for blind and visually impaired students. With the support of the WISE Prize, the team launched BoDesk, an intelligent platform that helps teachers plan lessons and track student progress, and BoQuest, an interactive educational app that makes learning more engaging and accessible. The team also developed pre-Braille and Braille curricula in both Arabic and English, powered by AI to structure lessons and support formative assessment.

Key features include:

  • An AI-powered teacher dashboard that enables teachers to create personalized lesson plans and assignments for each student
  • Comprehensive Arabic and English curricula covering all essential Braille skills, removing guesswork for teachers
  • A mobile app that makes Braille enjoyable through gamified experiences
  • A flexible, device-independent platform that allows students to use their own devices or benefit from Bonocle’s innovative, low-cost paper-based solution
  • An open and evolving platform featuring a continuously expanding content library
  • Diverse educational applications that go beyond basic literacy to include technology enablement, gaming, and the enhancement of STEM learning

What truly sets Bonocle apart is its commitment to inclusion. The platform is designed not only for blind users but also engages their sighted parents, friends, and peers, enriching educational experiences and promoting social integration to ensure that blind individuals can learn and interact inclusively within their communities.

Impact to date:

  • Pilot testing was conducted with small groups in Qatar and Canada, along with additional interviews in the United States and Singapore
  • Over 80% of surveyed users reported that their Braille skills were below their desired level, with 40% saying they rarely read in Braille
  • Bonocle’s shift from hardware to software during the WISE Prize cycle enabled the team to enhance gamification, voice feedback, and multilingual instruction

Future Prospects:

Bonocle has set goals for the years ahead, which include:

  • Becoming a global leader in accessible education within five years
  • Upskilling more than 100 teachers of visually impaired students across the Middle East within the next three years
  • Continuing its expansion across North America and MENA before entering Asian markets
  • Empowering 10,000 blind students with high-quality Arabic Braille education within the next three years
  • Expanding the platform’s content, further enhancing its inclusivity and impact
  • Building a global community of educators specialized in teaching visually impaired students, fostering knowledge exchange to collectively combat illiteracy
  • Collaborating with partner schools to validate the Arabic curriculum and expand across Arabic and English-speaking markets

This solution directly addresses existing challenges by leveraging technology to strengthen Braille literacy, focusing on foundational skills through gamification and innovative learning tools.
