Mark Richmond previously worked for UNESCO from 1994 to 2012 in a succession of different capacities: as a programme specialist in education-in-emergencies stationed in sub-Saharan Africa and former Yugoslavia; as a senior executive officer (English speechwriter and focal point for education) in the Office of the Director-General of UNESCO; and as a Director in UNESCO\u2019s Education Sector in Paris with responsibility for leading, coordinating and managing programmes in the following areas: Education for All (EFA); education for sustainable development; education and HIV & AIDS; global literacy; education for peace and human rights; and education for post-conflict and post-disaster situations. During 2006-2012, he was the UNESCO Global Coordinator for HIV & AIDS.<\/p>\n
At UNESCO, he commissioned and oversaw the preparation of the 2007 and 2010 editions of Education under Attack, a global study of targeted violent attacks on students, teachers and education institutions. Subsequently, as an international education consultant, he was the Project Team Leader\/Chief Editor for the preparation of Education under Attack 2014 (New York, GCPEA).<\/p>\n
He is an educationist and social scientist, with qualifications in political science (BA Hons, University of Sheffield, UK, 1971) and education (M. Phil, University of Hull, UK, 1989). In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in education by the University of Lincoln (UK) for services to global education. He has been a Visiting Research Fellow at the International Relations Programme, Ramon Llull University, Barcelona.
