BaBalakrishnan (“Bala”) Venkatachalam is a seasoned social impact leader with over 25 years of experience in driving innovation, organizational growth, and cross-sector collaboration in education and development. He currently serves as the President and COO of Pratham International, where he leads strategy, operations, and global partnerships to scale evidence-based education and youth training programs globally.

Bala has worked extensively across India, the U.S., and more recently in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, helping to launch and expand impactful initiatives in foundational learning, technology-enabled instruction, and vocational training.

Prior to this, Bala served as the Executive Director of Pratham USA, where he led the transformation of the organization into a professionally managed fundraising and engagement platform. His earlier experiences include roles at Innovations for Poverty Action, The Monitor Group, and KPMG, as well as co-founding a mobile tech startup focused on field data solutions.

He brings deep expertise in organizational development, governance, fundraising, and systems-level change, and has worked closely with governments, multilateral donors, and philanthropic partners to strengthen education systems. Bala holds an MBA from INSEAD, is a qualified Chartered Accountant, and serves on multiple boards and advisory groups related to global education and sustainability.
